I'd rather be smokin......

This here is a post about how my work is driving me to drink.

If the ever-present threat of random drug testing, and, if the policy on recreational drug use was not so fucking explicit....

If I knew for sure that my smoking a lil' Mary Jane tonight could in no way lead to a state of joblessness tomorrow....

I'd so much rather....

Leah...

As a new chapter begins.... so ends the other.

So we went back to the crossroads the other day.... It had been a couple of years since and the management had changed, but not much else. The long line to the lone restroom and the packed dancefloor remained.... Taking care to avoid both this time; I sat at the bar instead and reminisced on a time gone by. Leah is married now and with child... I smile ruefully as I remembered that conversation, still fresh even four months later.

Her: "Hey K... long time." All cheery..... and shit
Me: "I know, how have you been?" Imitating cheery tone
Her: "I've been alright.. you?"
Me: "Not bad.... Congratulations by the way." Remembering my manners
Her:" O.M.G....... Who told you?" With what I thought was mock astonishment
Me: "About the wedding?" Not sure what the big deal was
Her: "No.... Oh!... Crap....." Realizing that the previously non-existant cat was halfway out the bag n wasn't going back
Me: "Wait... what? Do you have something else I should be congratulating you on?"
Her: "Uhmmmm..... maybe."
Me: "Wait..... Are you pregnant?" Like what else could it be short pause
Her: "I am..... " with some repressed pride somehow coming through

Long pause on my part.... How long does a pregnancy last again?

Her: "O.M.G. K... are you counting months?" Now that has got to be mock astonishment
Me: "What... nooo....."
Her:"Whatever man.... no It Is Not Yours..." But it could have been you moron.
Me: "No?" Hoping the mock astonishment is taken as such.
Her: "Sorry hun... am only five months along." Guess it wasn't.

Short pause as again I pull up that handy calendar tucked away somewhere in my head.

Her: "Ok... you really need to stop counting... Vegas was more than nine months ago."
Me: "Oh... Thank Goodness..... whatever happened there was supposed to stay there." All high n mightyish.
Her: "What happened?" In that tone specially designed to take the air out of overinflated egos.
Me: "Nothing I guess.... and obviously we can't repeat it this year no?" Tone intentionally laced with regret.
Her: "You could.... Definitely don't need me for that."

I ordered another glass of Scotch.... I had really been looking forward to Vegas this year.

Oh! For fuck's sake.....

Somehow, last night, the decision to go out and have one shot and an OJ turned into two shots after the OJ, then a Scotch and an OJ, then another scotch and forget the OJ, then undressing and choosing the sofa over the bed...... Thank God for good roomies, I hope my first client this morning is just as non-judgemental:)... Clearly, decision making is not my strong suit, I am going with undecided for the rest of the year. It is safer that way, I think, just don't know for whom. Now where's my damn cell phone!

Mondays with Riri... girls n their moving in ways

It never ceases to amaze me how girls can so quietly sneak their way into your life (home); you don't realize it until you wake up one day n they already moved in..... literally. Yeah, I have a new girl in my life and believe it or not, I am actually loving it. We have totally different lives and schedules and Mondays are the only days we get to spend together, usually at mines.

I noticed it after the first Monday.... her little white hat with the pink bow, tucked in between the cushion n the back of the couch we'd been chilling on. I picked it up and sniffed it, drinking in the fresh smell of her, thought for a second about calling her back to pick it up but then I figured she'd be back in a week anyway, she'd get it then.

Well she did come back the next week, but she didn't pick it up. I completely forgot about it until I went to throw the little blanket she'd left this time into the closet and noticed the little white hat. The week after it was a single pink sock, her fav plastic bottle the next, and so it went, t-shirt, head wrap and what have you. Finally it occurred to me that I should probably confront her.... talk to her about it, you know; nip it in the bud so to speak. Today was the day I was gonna do that.

But as I was kissing her good morning, her mother ran back from the car.....
"Here..." panting and a little out of breath, "I almost forgot to give you these." She smiled mischeviously as she handed me an unoppened bag of huggies. Then it dawned on me, there was no turning back. Aryanna is here to stay.... five months old tomorrow and she's already perfected that part of the game. Boy are we in for some trouble with this one. Luv you girl.

Unstoppable? Nah! Not The Bilas train

It all started when I met a woman on a train...... Remember 'The Tourist'?

I'm Les.... I'm Kei.... There the similarities end.

I'd been standing by the window like I normally did... looking out towards the horizon.... watching the hills roll on peacefully by. There was nothing on my mind... and it felt good. Peace, like the hills, I thought.

She'd been walking by.... Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her slow down as she glanced my way, hesitate a moment then step up to the window, a few inches to my right, and exclaim how beautiful it was.

I'd smiled and nodded in agreement then I'd sought the beauty she was referring to and not quite seen it... just the peace.

Les: Kei? That's an interesting name.... extending a tiny manicured hand. Nice to meet you.

Kei: Nice to meet you too... Clasping it with my slightly calloused one. Les?

Les: Yes.... Short for Leslie. Did you just get on?

Kei: On?

Les: The bilas train....

Kei: Oh... No... It's been over five months now.

Les: Oh Honey... Then you just got on.

A wry smile lingering on her face as she added that it's been five years since.

Wow! Did she say five years....

Kei: No shit... five years?

Not bothering to hide my surprise as I studied her with renewed interest.

Les: I know... Can't hardly believe it myself.

I noted the sun-bleached blonde hair, the spidery lines around her sparkly blue eyes.... the little etches on her taut cheeks, the sun burnt skin, the small bloused frame.... b cups, tiny waist, slightly curvy hips down to the lines of her thighs beneath the fitted skirt to her nicely defined ankles.

Kei: Don't tell me... someone kidnapped you and is holding you hostage.

Mid to late forties... I figured she must be.

Les: Hahaha... exposing two rows of small perfectly polished teeth. I wish. But look at you... what are you doing aboard? I'm sure you have no problem getting laid.

Kei: But I do.... I just can't seem to be able to close the deal. The gentleman in me is always getting in my way. I quipped but only half jokingly.

Les: Self cockblocking.... how unmanly.

Kei: Yeah.... Tell me about it. But how about you? Do you just not like sex or what is your hold up?

Les: Condoms.

Kei: Condoms? Nearly choking on the syllables.

Happy Anniversary Aryanna.... of life, circles and all

So..... a month ago, in the wee hours of the morning, beautiful Aryanna shot out into this world without much fanfare. Her Uncle Kei, exhausted after 9 long months of waiting and anticipating, was uncomfortably passed out in a makeshift bed fashioned out of two hard hospital chairs. Luckily for Aryanna, his expertise in all things birthing... and life in general, was not necessary at that particular moment as the team of doctors, nurses, pusher and urger were able to competently manage her safe passage. He did solemnly swear to her though... that he would always be there for her and that exhausted or not, he would always be alert and ready to fulfill his Uncle duties (read spoil) for the rest of his life:)

Happy Birthday to you my dear niece.

No Pun Entrended

I love Wikipedia… I know now the meaning, the different types, usage and even the history of puns; but I still have no idea where to place one except, off course, where none is intended.

A prisoner in my own mind.............................

Behind these prison walls
Doing my paces
Doing my time
I am, Spending my restless nights
Visioning faces
Oh they all crying
Cryyyyyyyyyying
Prison ah nuh bed a roses
The livity it makes me ball
I wish that jah could come and take us back in time
Cause I swear
That I can be a better man
Yes I swear, if only you could understand
The faith in me shall set me free reflection
The faith in me shall set me free reflection
Jah Cure - Prison Wall

Sitting here, at the bottom of this deep dark sea that is the unfortunate circumstance of my life, my ambitions firmly anchored to an unremarkable past, I watch listlessly as my hapless imagination struggles towards an improbable future.... A prisoner of time

Holy Shit!!!!!!!!!!!! I must have upset de gods

Just this morning, my left ear forgot what it was there for.... now. all I can hear is some ringing that is really about to drive me nuts.... that is if these hives don't get me there first... or this lil' pimple on the inside of my left eyelid.

Addendum:
Two days later, the hearing is almost all back.... just enough so that I cannot quite trust what I am hearing or that I am hearing what I should be hearing. I keep looking around to see if I missed something past the humming that's become part of my left side.

The pimple is gone... I know coz I spent fifteen minutes this morning looking for it; it's still bugging the shit out of me though, hence the looking.... and as soon as I wondered about the hives, the itching started again.... lol!

But other than that, life is golden.... No, I'm not being sarcastic.

Of mirrors and men...

".... if a man can stand up to the mirror, he can stand up to life."... Quoted from Kings of the Evening (2007)

I been standing up to my mirror lately.... on tippy toes too, coz my mirror is not so big and is set a little high... and life; it has been staring me down, big smirk on it's face.... and it's all I can do not to turn around and run.... but stand up I must.

Tonight I cooked....

Again... the food got charred. But seeing how it's been more than a year... I should be glad I was able to turn on the stove without burning down the apartment:)

Oh! Hi Peeps.... Yeah, I'm still around... still bumming:)

Honey, I'm back... Busted out of the joint

"huh?" I startle myself out of a dream.... look around me and take in my bearing. I'm inside a car.... in the driver's seat of a cramped VW that's badly reeking of cigarette smoke. It's parked inside what apppears to be a large indoor parking garage. The passenger seat is empty but the window is down... a cool breeze is drifting in along with a few snatches of one end of a phone conversation. There is a girl leaning against the car, and she is on her cell phone. From what I can tell she is giving directions. Two words stand out.... "The Strip"

Vegas.... Again?

********

That's right. Me.... and five.... no, seven girls and the sin city. Praise the Lord.. Halleluhia.....

But not so fast

Two hours into the quick trip to pick up a rental and am beginning to rue my accepting of this arrangement. Female company is highly overrated... I'm thinking, and the possibility of some group action is quickly losing it's allure. I mean... how does a quick stop to pick up some necessities at a CVS take an hour... couldn't these necessities have fit in their carry on luggage like mine did? And besides, if they are necessities shouldn't they be easier to find...

Hmmm! 28.00 dollars for the 1.75l Captain vs $21.00 for the three quarter liter? I should probably stick with Vodka this time around though... ati how much for the Grey Goose? O.k. maybe we'll go with the Sky we've learnt to love.

Oh! Kei..... Don't worry about the Vodka... we've got plenty in the room... it's cheaper in Texas.

"Oh Yeah?"... maybe this ain't that bad... but can we leave already? Holy Shit... a whole cartfull of necessities? How in the world are we going to fit all that stuff plus the luggage we picking up at the airport in the trunk of that tiny Jetta?

Fade in to three hours and three yeiger bombs later....

Oh my word... girls are crazy... and quite shameless too.... all this sex talk is having a funny effect on me. Or is it the alcohol? Hard Rock Cafe here we cummeth..... but first, a quick stop at the drug store we were at earlier. Be right back ladies.....

Twenty minutes later, all but one of the girls dropped off at the club... I finally find a parking spot. I take out the packet from the drug store and start to roll up a small one... I am definitely loving this city... where else can u pick up a dime at your local drug store.

It takes my drunk ass a long couple of minutes but finally I think I'm ready to light up and join Bob Marley in Kayaville. I reach for the lighter that should be in the dash but it's not there. Open the glove compartment... nada. Pat pockets..... Okay, there has to be a lighter in this car somewhere.... oh come on... lighter anyone? Frustrated, I lean back n try to think....

******

'Oh my God... he is up..... three hours later.... how are we doing Kei?" A very familiar looking face peeks in through the passenger window. I start to answer but my mouth is dry. I notice a half empty cup in the cup holder and take a swig.... and come close to sputtering the contents all over the steering wheel as the straight Jack Daniels scorches its way down my throat.

I bring up my left arm and start to wipe away at whatever little managed to escape my mouth and I notice the roll up in my hand. Looks like a joint that is yet to be lit... what the hell.....

So it happened again….

“Reality is fake, dreams are for real” …Tupac Shakur

Once again, this morning, from a nightmare I arose

….twice or thrice a week, these past months, I’ve had this same dream….. that I’d wake up one day, thirty and old, with nary a bit to show, for the score and a half of a pitiful existence, but a resume replete with unfinished masterpieces, amazing fetes half pulled, and a bright future barely lived….. and ……. twice or thrice every week, I reached for me bottle…. and shivering, I’d took a swig, to help brave the day, and wash away the cold sweat that had broken in my mind…… glad that it was just a dream.

Once again, this morning, from the same nightmare I arose

….. with one arm I reached out and wiped the cold sweat that had broken on my brow, and blindly searched with the other for my escape…. and as I swung it desperately towards my mouth, it finally dawned on me…. Tupac may have been right, but now he was dead.

Half full my ass…. the fucking bottle is empty, and this is not a dream….. life’s a bitch innit!

Finally..... My final respects

Last year I half joked about not being able to think things through... alluding to my inability to take things seriously and blaming my mother for it seeing how all that I am today can be directly attributed to how she raised me. This morning as I struggle to hold back a legion of emotions that are threatening to explode and overwhelm me, I can only smile bitterly as I consider the irony of it all. If only I could be half the man that she raised me to be.

Anyway, one August day last year, I started what follows below....a letter to my mother, and meant to post it as my middle of the year "Mother's day" post. It had occurred to me that "Mother's Day", while being a really good idea, was really shortchanging our mother's who most certainly deserve to be recognized every single day for the hard work they've done and for their undying love... I never got to finish it.... and even more sadly, I never got to send it.

Mummy Dearest

This Mother's Day, I'd like to dedicate this, perhaps my final post on this blog, to the greatest woman I know. There are not enough words in my vocabulary to give a fitting enough tribute to her. Those who may have had the good fortune to have met and known her will bear testimony to this:- That 'Seeking neither fame nor fortune, she gave of her wealth, her time, and her self, time and time again, in ways and manner that a thousand words from me, or from anyone else for that matter, would never justify. In her kind, soft-spoken but firm manner, she affected many a life in a way that only a sincere soul could and left an indelible that eternity itself will never erase.'

I owe her my life, my love and my gratitude. I will forever be indebted to you mum. Your passing may have been sudden and unexpected but you've left a surplus in our lives that will abound for the rest of our lives. May we honor your memories in everything that we do.

ROC BOYS

And the winner is..... Me.

I'm not that crazy about concerts.... in other words, there is not that many artists that I'd sell my grandmother to go see. Matter of fact, I can only think of one - Bob Marley; and luckily for my sweet granny, they both dead.

So it turns out that a girl I know doesn't have many friends... and the few she does, four to be exact, are very generous.... generous enough to buy her two pricey tickets to go see Hov, who, coincidentally, she likely would have sold her granny to go see... perhaps those friends aren't just being generous, maybe they are acting in her grandmother's best interest....

Anyway, whatever the case, turns out that of all her four friends and 6 Billion plus non-friends in the world, I'm the lucky one who happens to be free to go with her. Or at least the first one to say yes?

So...

Look for me! Young, Me
Cruisin down the Masspike - high, way
Doing what some y'all 'd like to do - our, way
Eyes behind shades, this necklace the reason
this one's gonna be, a blind date
But today, I got my thoroughest girl wit me
I'm mashin the gas, she's grabbin the wheel, it's trippy how hard
She rides with me - the new Bobby and Whitney
Only time we don't speak is while payin the friggin toll
She gets to carry the change, but soon as the payin is over
She's right back to being my soldier
Cuz mami's a rider, and I'm a roller
Put us together, how they gon' stop both us?
What ever she lacks, I'm right over her shoulder
When I'm off track mami is keepin me focused
So let's, lock this down like it's supposed to be
The 2010 Bonnie and Clyde, Her and Me

What happened in Vegas….

SDC11015

Well, y’all know that what happens there stays there… and if you’ve watched ‘Hangover’ the movie, then you also know that the reason it does is because… well, you don’t quite remember it wholly… rather in bits and pieces that don’t quite make enough sense to you, let alone anyone who might be interested in hearing you recount it to them. Yesterday, while chatting with FG, who I’d hoped to but did not meet there, I realized that not only had I forgotten what had happened there, I’d even forgotten to indicate here or on twitter, or fb, that I’d be attending the USA Sevens tournament which this year was held in Las Vegas. So, not only do I not know whether I met any bloggers, I have no idea if any other than myself had planned to and or did attend this Kenyan National event.

Yeah… It’s National alright. That much I do remember. Rather, I don’t remember feeling so Kenyan, and proud to be it, and acting it, and reveling in it. Visit any IRB site that mentions Kenya and you will be impressed by the awe in which the Kenyan Rugby fan is held, even probably more so than the actual team, which by the way so very well reps for Kenya. You will find that any commentary on the Kenyan team will not fail to commentate on and laud their fans for their sheer dominance of the Rugby events they attend. Vegas was no exception; they were there and they represented….. one huge red body of emotion that stayed continuously high, through the highs and lows and more… aided in part by the unlimited availability of Jeremiah Waters…. well, their US equivalents anyway, but for the better part by the unifying force that being and getting together (behind enemy lines) in a foreign land produces.

SDC11016

So huge a force to reckon with they were that everybody else…. other than the damn Samoans…. wanted to be Kenyan… and even they too will.. sooner or later. I mean, we (my group) hadn’t been inside the Stadium doors more than a minute before we were accosted by a seemingly sane white girl who, recognizing our nationality from our attire, had to touch ‘real live Kenyans’ and did not leave until she had kissed one of us… am not sure who it was that got the honor… I think it was Njeri… or was it? Well, it couldn’t have been me…. while she could have mistaken me for real, I couldn’t very well pass for Kenyan despite the camouflage, much less a live one.

Soon after, soon as the good Capt. M had ministered to my lifeless body… I too…. as Kenyan as I’m not, was a tiny part of the Red Madness…. dancing, stomping, singing.... yelling… and shamelessly making a grand fool of myself; and making sure that the beer vendors recognized that something great had just happened in Vegas that weekend. And that didn’t just go for the concessions at the Stadium…. Heck! I only made it to the stadium once, and that was on the first day and then at 4p.m at that…… but well in time for the last (for Mashujaa) game of the day…. Owing to the fact that the nightlife – which in Vegas, quite reminiscent of hengs back home, extends to the wee hours of the morning; and our tendencies or mine at least, of wanting to make all of life one continuous party.

The madness was as evident at the clubs at night as it was at the Stadium in the day. I don’t suppose Vegas has ever had such a huge influx of Heineken drinkers as that weekend.

Anyway…. Yeah, I finally attended the US Sevens…. and the whole way there bemoaning the fact that just when I finally decided to attend, they moved the venue from San Diego… but not anymore. The few coherent memories I have of Vegas have not a hint of regret… and I did go to San Diego later in the week for some R n RJ.

Why.....

I'm Hurting Inside

When I was just a little child,
Happiness was there awhile.
Then from me, yeah, it slipped one day.
Happiness, come back, I say.
'Cause if you don't come, I've got to go lookin'
for happiness.
Well, if you don't come, I've got to go lookin',
Lord, for happiness, happiness.
- Bob Marley

So I went looking for happiness... and I was not disappointed. In California I found her, walking along the white sandy beach; singing in the cheery breeze; the sparse clouds dancing lightly to her tune; and the big yellow sun, orange with tan, lounged lazily against the sky, smiling indulgently as her words floated by.

I fell on my knees and begged her please... come back with me to the northeast, if only for a little while at least. She paused for a moment and I thought I saw her eyes mist... before she turned and skipped along, singing again as if I didn't even exist.
